6/28/26 FREE Poetry Writing Workshop

Ever thought you might like write poetry? Or maybe you’ve started already? In this 90-minute class, taught by a former New York Times journalist with a deep love of poetry, we’ll look over some short poems and discuss how they achieve their effect and make you feel.

Students will then write their own poem and those who want to can read them to the group. All discussion will be non-critical!

You’ll need to bring something to write on, be it paper or a computer. Before class, please read the attached poems (in the first case, including the explanatory text) so you come prepared.

Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers by Adrienne Rich                     We Real Cool by Gwendolyn Brooks

Ozymandias by Percy Byshe Shelley                           The Peace of Wild Things by Wendell Berry

Introduction to Poetry by Billy Collilns

Nancy Wartik is a retired writer/reporter/social media moderator who spent 17 years on staff at the The New York Times.
