Sunday May 11th Noon – 6pm Luscious Lobster for a Decadent Mother’s Day

Mom deserves the BEST. Treat her to an indulgent, delicious, day of luscious LOBSTER by our friends from Rebel Lobster. Top it off with a root beer float or hard cider slushie for dessert. We hope the apple orchards will be in bloom, but that’s completely up to Mother Nature. But she is probably going to be busy celebrating Mother’s day too. Always fun for the whole family including the dog!

Saturday July 29th Monarch Butterfly Day

Two educational and fun events on Saturday July 29th.

10:00 AM – FREE EVENT. Learn How To Attract and Nurture Monarch Butterflies.

We welcome Kathleen Pomerleau, also known as the “Butterfly Lady” who has been dedicated to the propagation and preservation of native habitat to protect Monarch Butterflies. See live examples of all of the stages of the Monarch butterfly development and learn what you can do in your own back yard to help this beautiful, endangered species grown and thrive.

4:00 PM Monarch Butterfly Paint & Sip Class $45

Paint along with Debrisware Art at Sapsucker Farms! We will be creating a Monarch Butterfly painting using acrylics on 16″ X 20″ stretched canvas. The monarch and some flowers will be traced onto the canvas for you. Background and flower colors can easily be modified to fit your tastes. Difficulty level is difficult for the butterfly, and fairly easy for the background and flowers. $45/person includes paint, canvas, use of supplies, instruction, and ONE drink of your choice per student.

THIS IS A FREE EVENT. No need to register ahead of time, just show up and learn all about bats.

Come explore “The Wonderous World of Bats” with Lorrie Cashman, an Environmental Educator, during this family friendly presentation on June 17th at 1:00 pm.

There are many stories, myths and misunderstandings about bats. You may be surprised to learn the important role bats play in all the ecosystems they live.

Join us to learn amazing facts about our Minnesota bats and bats around the world.

Backyard Chickens and Homesteading Workshop by U of M Extension Kanabec County Master Gardeners.

Here’s your chance to learn how to grow your own wholesome food, save money and be more self-sufficient and sustainable in difficult economic conditions.

Learn to grow your own backyard chickens and vegetables at the Homesteading Workshop on Saturday, February 25th from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Sapsucker Farms located at 2752- 215th Ave. Mora, MN 55051.

Desiree Nelson, Nelson Grass Farm, Ogilvie will cover “Raising Chickens in the Backyard.” She will discuss the pros and cons of raising chickens, backyard shelter/housing for layers and broilers, feeding and water, raising chicks or buying older hens. She will also share tips on raising chickens in the winter and summer. 

Dianne Patras, U of M Extension Chisago County Master Gardener will cover “Starting A Backyard Vegetable Garden.”

Her presentation will include site selection and soil preparation, raised beds, planting methods, cool and warm season crops, transplanting, companion cropping and crop rotation, insect and disease prevention, watering, mulching, pollinators, harvest, and storage.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with coffee and treats. 

There is no fee, but donations will be appreciated to cover expenses. The Kanabec County Master Gardeners will have handouts at an information table. Nelson Grass Farm and Sapsucker Farms will have items for sale.  Rollin’ Nolen’s Smokehouse food truck will be on site all day. The workshop is being sponsored by the University of Minnesota Extension Kanabec County Extension Committee and Master Gardeners, and Sapsucker Farms.

Pre-registration is highly recommended by February 20th by contacting the Kanabec County Coordinator’s office at 320-679-6440

FREE EVENT. Why dark skies? What is light pollution and how does it affect our health and the environment? How do we all benefit from dark skies? Learn more about the benefits of dark skies and the initiatives underway here in Minnesota.

Join us on Saturday December 3rd for a presentation by Todd Burlet, a Delegate for the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA), which has been the world’s leading authority on light pollution since 1988, the President of Starry Skies North, the Minnesota and Mid-Continent chapter of the IDA, which covers six states and two Canadian provinces, and a member of the American Astronomical Society.
